Contaminated site remediation: groundwater protection at the former Rütgers Works

Protecting our environment requires perseverance and foresight – particularly in the case of historical contamination that has built up over many decades. On the 6.3-hectare site of the former Rütgers Works, we are committed to the long-term protection and remediation of the groundwater: whilst the surface has already been successfully revitalised, our focus remains on the sustainable monitoring and treatment of groundwater contamination.

A site steeped in history

The site of the former Rütgers Works has a history of industrial use stretching back over a century. During this period, various processes were carried out to impregnate wooden sleepers and timber building materials, during which substances such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and tar oil seeped into the subsoil. These substances have spread into the groundwater, necessitating a well-thought-out remediation strategy.

Our task: to monitor and contain the contamination. The aim is not only to minimise immediate damage but also to develop and implement a long-term, sustainable remediation plan for this contaminated site.

How do you tackle contamination that has spread through the soil and groundwater over decades? On the 6.3-hectare site of the former Rütgers Works, we are developing sustainable solutions to address precisely this challenge.

Tailor-made refurbishment planning

Before any measures can be taken, a thorough analysis of the site is required. In this project, we combined traditional investigation methods – such as research into historical land use and the analysis of aerial photographs – with modern technologies to obtain a comprehensive picture of the contaminated site. The precise localisation of contamination sources and the creation of groundwater flow and transport models were essential for understanding the dynamics of the contamination.

Building on this, we developed a remediation concept that combines various approaches. An important initial measure, for example, is the targeted skimming of tar oil to prevent the sources of contamination from spreading. We also rely on innovative methods such as natural attenuation (NA).

We are delighted to be part of this project. It demonstrates how, through sound planning and modern technologies, contaminated sites can be managed in a sustainable manner.

Forward-looking procedures and continuous monitoring

Advanced remediation methods rely on the microbial degradation of pollutants. Our research in this area has shown that targeted stimulation of natural processes in groundwater can significantly reduce pollutant levels. Methods such as Enhanced Natural Attenuation (ENA) and technologies such as air sparging support these degradation processes by introducing oxygen, thereby promoting the activity of microorganisms.

Through regular monitoring, we ensure that the measures remain effective and can be flexibly adapted where necessary.

A long-term responsibility

Whilst the site itself has already been remediated and successfully put to new use at ground level, the ongoing protection of the groundwater remains a key priority. Our measures are therefore designed not only to resolve immediate problems, but also to address the remaining contamination in a sustainable manner over the coming years.

This requires close cooperation between companies, public authorities and consultants, as well as the use of modern technologies and careful planning.
